Scouts in Pick-up Perfect for your next Explorer Scout Expedition

The Gambia is an ideal destination for an Explorer Scout, Network Scout or Ranger Guide Expedition. The country is English speaking, there is currently democratically elected government, it is 6 hour flight from the UK and there is no time difference.

Kaira Konko Scout Lodge is a perfect place to base your group for all or part of an expedition. Your hosts will make you feel very welcome and be delighted to share their life with you. Groups take away more than they can give. Overseas groups are a vital part of the income to Kaira Konko and mean Scouting can continue to flourish in the heart of The Gambia. There are great opportunities for community projects for visiting groups.

An Explorer Scout Expedition

Hampshire Explorer Scouts had a fantastic 2 week expedition to Kaira Konko, this was the fourth such trip strengthening links with Kaira Konko. The Unit spent the past year planning, training and fund raising for the trip. In December a group of 25 leaders and Explorers flew to the capital Banjul. After a couple of days familiarisation they headed up country to Kaira Konko Lodge in Soma to be welcomed by the Gambian Scouts. Some Explorers were returning two years after their first trip and for others it was their first glimpse of Kaira Konko.

During the two week expedition the Explorers carried out community projects in and around Soma, working alongside Gambian Scouts and using funds raised from supporters across the UK

  • we painted classrooms at Pakalinding School,
  • shipped out books donated from the people and schools of Hampshire to furnish a library at Kani Kunda School,
  • painted the Kaira Konko compound wall and helped in the vegetable garden
  • paid for and help to re-roof two family compounds so they did not leak in the rainy season

And we went camping for a night in a village half an hour into the bush. The villages at Fon Koi Kunda gave us a warm welcome and named the vegetable garden after Ruth one of our leaders...'Ruf's Garden'

We shared programme ideas to help with Scouting at Kaira Konko, visited the new Soma Fire Station with fire engines provided by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, and took knitted baby clothes to the hospital

Explorers went birdwatching, food shopping in the market with the Gambian Scouts, shared a camp fire with local Scouts and…. who knows what else!! This was a truly remarkable adventure and insight in to life in The Gambia.

The Explorer Scouts contributed more than half the cost themselves but to enable help support the community projects, the Explorers organised a number of fund raising events in 2008 to raise around over £10,000.

We are looking forward to our return....
