Soma community garden

Community gardens are common within The Gambia, where traditionally the responsibility of feeding the family falls upon the shoulders of women.  These gardens provide an invaluable space for cultivation of a wide range of produce.

As a community garden the responsibility of tending and watering crops can be shared amongst a wide group. The gardens provide a peaceful environment for local women to exchange news and ideas and pass on knowledge to younger generations.  Often the gardens are poorly supplied with water, requiring those tending the crops to carry water over large distances. Kaira Konko has provided a number of wells and stand pipes at Soma garden, with future plans to build a bantaba, provide improved irrigation systems and improve the fencing around the garden to keep out animals.
